At Alexander Holburn, we are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive work environment which considers the unique position and experiences of women.

This ethos inspired us to establish the Alexander Holburn Women’s Forum, now in its 25th year. Our goal is a simple one: the professional and personal advancement of our women lawyers.

Our commitment to this goal is reflected in our values, policies and the firm’s composition:

  • Approximately 60% of our associates/associate counsel and approximately 40% of our partners are women.
  • More than half of our administrative leadership team is comprised of women, including our Chief Operating Officer.
  • The majority of our articled and summer students are women.
  • We offer regular training and seminars on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Our recruitment team is trained to minimize unconscious bias.
  • We support our women lawyer’s career progression via mentorship and career planning.
  • Our parental leave policy is among the most competitive offered by law firms.

The Current Chair of the Women’s Forum is Menka Sull.

Memorable Events

As part of its mandate, the Women’s Forum organizes unique events to celebrate the women in our workplace and community and to provide a space for recognition, networking, mentoring and business development.

CRYSTAL BOWL RECEPTION

For over 25 years it has been Alexander Holburn’s tradition to bring together our women lawyers, students, and administrative leadership to celebrate the success of our newest women partners at a reception originally hosted by our first woman partner, Jo Ann Carmichael, K.C. At the reception, each new partner receives a crystal bowl to commemorate this important milestone in their career.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

Over the years, it has also become part of our tradition to celebrate the women in our firm and community for International Women’s Day. Our Women’s Forum organizes events and activities throughout the week, including a brunch and champagne toast for the entire firm. We also select and support a charitable organization that is doing amazing work to empower women and girls.

The firm also encourages community engagement by providing each employee one paid day per year to volunteer at the charity of their choosing. The organizations we have supported as a firm include:
