As chair of the British Columbia Aviation Council Scholarship and Awards Committee, Michael Dery, Partner & Leader of our Aviation Practice had the privilege of speaking at the welcome reception of the BC Aviation Council Conference. Michael spoke about the success and importance of the council’s scholarship program, highlighting the tremendous growth and impact the program has achieved over the years.
Highlights from the Speech
Hard Work of Committee Members:
The committee members tirelessly review hundreds of scholarship applications each year. Their dedication ensures that the most deserving candidates are selected, supporting the future of aviation in British Columbia.
Growth of the Scholarship Program:
The scholarship program has seen remarkable growth, increasing from approximately $30,000 in scholarships awarded in 2019 to just under $150,000 this year. This substantial increase demonstrates the council’s commitment to investing in the next generation of aviation professionals.
Introduction of Higher Value Scholarships:
In recent years, several higher value scholarships have been introduced, significantly reducing the financial burden on students, and making a tangible difference in the lives of aspiring aviation professionals.
Through the generous financial support of Pacific Coastal Airlines, three $10,000 scholarships are offered each year. These scholarships, funded by its annual Memorial Charity Golf Tournament, support diversity and assist indigenous and rural/remote community students in aviation and aerospace. The tournament has raised over $550,000 to support local charities, showcasing their ongoing commitment to the community.
Thanks to the Bain and Brown Family, a $20,000 scholarship is available to support the pursuit of a fixed wing or rotary pilot career with a Canadian airline. This scholarship aids students in completing progressive pilot training, leading to employment with a Canadian airline. The funds are distributed as follows: $5,000 towards training for a Private Pilot Licence, $10,000 towards training for a Commercial Pilot Licence, and $5,000 for training in IFR and/or Multi-Engine Certification.
